28th May 1978. It was an unforgettable day in the life of Sri. Kurian John Melamparambil Founder President of Melam Charities. His beloved father Shri. M.V.John was expired on that day due to cardiac arrest. It was an incident which touched the heart of young, Kurian John Melamparambil. Since it was a Sunday his father was a wealthy influential person, didn’t get proper medical attention on time. This disturbing fact urged Mr. Kurian John Melamparambil to help poor and needy patients by giving them proper medical attention and make them self dependent.
Mr. Kurian John Melamparambil practices the teaching of Lord Jesus Christ - "It is not the healthy who need a doctor, but the sick. But go and learn what this means. (Mathew Ch:9:12,13)
Melam Charities came into being in 1981. As a post graduate in social works Kurian John has a clear vision to lead the activities of a charitable organization. During the initial period he set apart a portion of his income for helping poor deserving patients.
Melam Charities named after his father Shri. M.V.John was registered as a society on September 10, 1986. This organization focuses on the practical approach to the doctrine of Lord Jesus without any publicity. But the word of the beneficiaries spreaded the news of this merciful act. Number of needy patients who approach him rose day by day. In the circumstances need of more funds became a reality. Mr.Kurian john Melamparambil put his concern in this regard before God and prayed. God answered his prayers and he started Melam (MVJ Foods) in 1992 to generate more funds for charity. The major part of company's profit goes to charity fund. God blessed MELAM PRODUCTS because of thankful prayers of the patients. Now MELAM is the largest exporting brand of spices from India.
The help of Melam charities is open to all poor deserving patients from any religion, cast or creed. Mr.Kurian John Melamparambil is thankful to Almighty for enabling him to spend more than 10 million rupees through Melam Charities. His services have reached more than 60000 families and 50000 patients so far.
In recognition of his humanitarian services , the Income Tax Department of India, has granted with three years of Income Tax Exemption under 80-G of the Income Tax Act from 1 - 4 - 1997 to 31 - 3 - 2000. So whatever the contributions/donations made will be eligible for income tax exemption.
